Homes left unoccupied are more vulnerable in the long dark evenings of autumn and winter. Most of us could make our homes more secure, but this need not involve expensive locks and alarms.

Looks count, so make your home appear occupied at all times. An unoccupied home is more likely to be targetted by the burglar. A light and radio placed on a timer switch and a thoughful neighbour removing a parcel from the step will help make a home appear occupied. Consider fitting PIR (Passive Infra-Red) operated lights outside. The occurence of dusk time burglaries increase in the longer evenings.

Reducing the parts of the home that cannot be viewed by caring neighbours leaves a weak spot. Tall, lockable gates, high fences and prickly plants all deter the would be intruder trying to reach the rear and sides of the property. Perimiters to the front, however, should be kept lower to enable good visibility from your caring neighbour.

Use what you have got to secure your home. Secure windows, paying particular attention to those on the ground floor and those above flat roof areas. Use those locks and bolts and make sure the keys are out of sight.

When out after dark it helps to wear light coloured clothing so you

can be easily seen by drivers. Cyclists are reminded to check their reflectors are clean and lights are working and used at night. Watch out for the slippery roads caused by fallen leaves! Always secure your bike with a good quality lock.

Finally, trust your instincts. If you think it is suspicious let us know, encourage your neighbour to do the same. Immediate reporting of suspicious incidents can lead to arrests. Don't foget that a vehicle number plate will give us a head start in locating the persons of interest to us.
